KATHMANDU, AUG 01 - Nepal’s second match of the ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCLC) has been halted due to rain with the hosts set for a revised target of 110 runs in 22 overs at the Cambusdoon New Ground in Ayr, Edinburgh, Scotland on Saturday’s reserved day.
Under overcast conditions, Nepal struggled with the bat and were eventually restricted for 167 all out in 49.1 overs. Scotland’s chase was delayed for almost three hours before the rain finally relented with the hosts presented with a revised target of 110 runs to win from 22 overs.
After the skies cleared out briefly, Scotland began their reply but the rain returned again with the score 15-1 in 1.4 overs. As a result, the match will continue from the same stage with the home side chasing the new Duckworth/Lewis target to seal their first round of the WCLC.
Nepal had gone into the match high on confidence after making Scotland struggle in their defense of a mammoth 235-7 in 36 overs before the visitors nearly pulled it off finishing at 232-5 on Wednesday. However, it was altogether a different story when Nepal were asked to bat first on Friday.
Nepal lost four wickets for just 41 runs in 10.5 overs as openers Mahesh Chhetri (three) and Anil Mandal (nine), vice-captain Gyanendra Malla (16) and skipper Paras Khadka (10) all gave away their wickets cheaply.
Sharad Vesawkar and Pradeep Airee (16) offered a brief resistance with a 33-run partnership but it was still not enough for Nepal to put a challenging total on the board.
Vesawkar top scored for Nepal with 30 runs off 66 balls, his innings included just two boundaries. Apart from Airee, Prithu Baskota also scored 16 with both the batsmen hitting a six and a four apiece. Basanta Regmi was Nepal’s next best scorer with 19 runs. Alasdair Evans was pick of the Scotland bowlers with 3-18 from 10 overs, while Safyaan Sharif, Gavin Main and Michael Leask had two scalps apiece.
Jayasuriya confirms participation in BatforNepal

Sri Lankan legendary cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya will be one of the World XI stars lining up against Nepal XI in the BatforNepal charity game scheduled for August 9 in Kinrara Oval, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Jayasuriya had extended his support to the one-day event, organised to raise funds for the April 25 Great Quake victims of Nepal, but his participation was yet to be confirmed. Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) President Mahinda Vallipuram confirmed on Jayasuriya’s participation.
Apart from Jayasuriya, former Pakistan wicket-keeping captain Rashid Latif and Bangladesh’s first Test skipper Aminu Islam will also return to the cricket pitch for the noble cause. Sohag Gazi and Abdur Razzaq, who have long been out of the national team of Bangladesh, have also confirmed their participation, according to the MCA President. Australian cricketers Steve O’Keefe and Marcus Stoinis, Malaysia’s Faiz Noor and Suresh Navaratnam along with Chetan Suryawanshi are the other players confirmed for the World XI.
Vallipuram thanked everyone for supporting the initiation. “We have been working hard to make this event a great success together with our counterpart Cricket Association of Nepal. We have received great support from many of the cricket boards from around the world, even from the countries who don’t have their cricketers in the World XI side,” said Vallipuram.
“The event will definitely showcase the power of sports, in this case cricket, to support each other in the time of need,” added Vallipuram. (PR)
